Academic Training and Early Influences
Bloch received his formal training at the Mariboes school and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Under the instruction of Wilhelm Marstrand, he cultivated his skills as a painter and printmaker. During his travels through the Netherlands, he encountered the work of Rembrandt, which provided a foundational influence on his development of light and shadow. In 1859, he relocated to Italy, where he resided until 1866, focusing on historical styles and rural genre scenes.

His return to Denmark marked a period of professional success. The 1864 painting Prometheus Unbound, exhibited in 1865, solidified his reputation. Following the death of Marstrand, Bloch completed the decoration of the ceremonial hall at the University of Copenhagen. He was later commissioned to produce twenty-three paintings depicting the life of Christ for the King's Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, a project completed between 1865 and 1879. His work was recognized with the Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1867 and the Decoration of the Cross of Honour of the Dannebrog in 1888.
Personal Life and Final Years
In 1868, Bloch married Alma Trepka in Rome. The couple remained together until her death in 1886, which left Bloch to care for their eight children. This period was marked by personal struggle for the artist. He continued his professional output as a member of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno until his death from cancer in Copenhagen on 22 February 1890. He was buried at Holmen Cemetery.
