A 7:53.64 personal best in the 3000 metres steeplechase cements Brimin Kipruto as the second fastest athlete to ever contest the event. This time, set in 2011, stands as the current African Record and remains just 0.01 seconds shy of the world record established by his former countryman, Saif Saaeed Shaheen.

Early Competitive Career

Born in Korkitony on 31 July 1985, Kipruto emerged as a talent during his teenage years. In 2001, he finished second in the steeplechase at the World Youth Championships in Debrecen. Following his graduation from Kipsoen Secondary School in 2003, he secured a silver medal at the African Junior Championships in Cameroon. By 2004, his versatility was evident when he took bronze in the 1500m at the World Junior Championships.

Olympic and Global Success

Kipruto transitioned to the senior international stage in 2004, earning a spot on the Kenyan Olympic team after placing second at the national trials. In Athens, he claimed the silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase. He secured a bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki and finished third at that year's IAAF World Athletics Final. His first global title arrived in 2007 at the World Championships in Osaka. This momentum culminated in his victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he captured the gold medal.

Later Performances and Training

The 2009 World Championships saw him finish seventh as the defending champion. During the 2010 season, he recorded two victories on the IAAF Diamond League circuit at Athletissima and Meeting Areva. Entering the 2010 Commonwealth Games with a season-leading mark of 8:00.90, he placed third in a Kenyan podium sweep. Kipruto maintains his residence in Korkitony and trains in Kaptagat near Eldoret with the Global Sports group, guided by coaches Patrick Sang and Joseph Chelimo.
