Professional Foundations and Background
Born in 1960, Mendoza attended the University of Santo Tomas to study advertising arts within the College of Architecture and Fine Arts. He operates under the alias Dante Mendoza when functioning as a production designer or cinematographer, roles he has held alongside his primary work as a director. Since 2005, he has directed sixteen films, fostering a significant creative partnership with actor Coco Martin, with whom he collaborated on seven projects including Masahista, Kaleldo, Foster Child, Tirador, Serbis, Kinatay, and Captive.

Mendoza achieved historic milestones within the international film festival circuit. He became the first Filipino filmmaker to secure the Best Director award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival for his film Kinatay in 2009. His reach extends to the other major European festivals; he remains the only Filipino director to receive nominations for top prizes at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. His 2012 feature Captive competed at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival, while his film Thy Womb was a contender for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival.

The scope of his accolades includes the 2009 Sitges Film Festival Best Director award and the 2014 Honorary Cyclo d'or.
