In 1964, Yegorov was selected as a science astronaut for the Voskhod 1 mission. This mission broke new ground as the first spacecraft to carry more than one individual, facilitating a multi-disciplinary approach to space exploration. During his time in orbit, Yegorov conducted medical experiments to monitor the biological impacts of spaceflight on himself and other crew members, providing the Soviet space program with vital health data.
Professional Legacy and Recognition
Following his spaceflight, Yegorov served as a colonel and continued his work within the Soviet medical and scientific sectors. His career earned him numerous honors, including the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1964, the Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR, and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He was also awarded the Medal for the Development of Virgin Lands and various service-related medals. He died in 1994 at age 56 in Moscow and was buried at Novodevichy Cemetery.
