Early Development and Stage Beginnings
Born in 1904 in Saratov, Babochkin was raised in an environment influenced by literature. At 14, he joined the Red Army for a year, serving on the Volga and Urals fronts. By 1920, he began his formal education at a drama school in his home city. He later moved to Moscow to study under Michael Chekhov, eventually transitioning to the Molodye Mastera studio under Illarion Pevtsov. During the 1920s, he pursued seasonal acting work in various locations, including Samarkand, Bishkek, Voronezh, Mogilev, and Berdichev.

Between 1927 and 1940, Babochkin resided in Leningrad, where he began his film career at Lenfilm Studio. His performance in the 1934 production Chapaev secured his status as a leading actor. He performed at the Leningrad State Pushkin Drama Theater and the Bolshoi Drama Theater. In 1937, he assumed the role of artistic director at the Bolshoi Drama Theater, a position he held until his move to Moscow in 1940.
Career Challenges and Later Life
Upon moving to Moscow, Babochkin continued his professional activities during World War II, notably visiting the besieged Leningrad to support defenders. His career faced significant interference in the 1950s after he played a corrupt official in a production of Shadows at the Pushkin Drama Theater. This role triggered professional censorship that restricted his opportunities for years. From 1955 until his death in 1975, he served as a member of the Maly Theatre troupe. He died in 1975 following a heart attack and was interred at Novodevichy Cemetery.
