Elected leader of the AKP in May 2016, Yıldırım assumed the role of prime minister shortly thereafter. His premiership coincided with the attempted military coup of 15 July 2016. He functioned as a key architect in the 2017 constitutional referendum, which transitioned the nation from a parliamentary system to an executive presidency. After stepping down as party leader to allow for Erdoğan's succession, Yıldırım served as Speaker of the Grand National Assembly from 2018 to 2019.
