A bachelor's degree in mathematics from Peking University in 1984 marked the commencement of a career that led Bin Yu to become a prominent figure in statistics and machine learning. Now a Chancellor's Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, she has spent decades advancing the theoretical foundations of computational analysis, neuroscience, and genomics within the United States academic system.
Academic Formation and Early Career
Born in 1969, Yu completed her undergraduate education in China before transitioning to the University of California, Berkeley for graduate studies. She earned a master's degree in 1987 and a Ph.D. in 1990, completing a dissertation titled Some Results on Empirical Processes and Stochastic Complexity under the joint supervision of Lucien Le Cam and Terry Speed. Following postdoctoral research at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and an assistant professorship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she joined the faculty at Berkeley in 1993. She attained tenure in 1997 and was appointed to the rank of Chancellor's Professor in 2006.

Yu’s research output spans statistics, machine learning, neuroscience, genomics, and remote sensing. Her work addresses dictionary learning, non-negative matrix factorization, and the application of convolutional neural networks and long short-term memory models. She has also developed frameworks for veridical data science and interpretable machine learning. Her practical applications include research on the theoretical foundations of deep learning and predictive modeling for COVID-19 severity within the United States. She also spent two years working at Bell Labs between 1998 and 2000 while on leave from her university duties.
Leadership and Professional Recognition
Beyond her research, Yu has held significant administrative and leadership roles, including chairing the Department of Statistics at Berkeley from 2009 to 2012. She served as president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2014. Her career is marked by numerous professional honors, including fellowships from the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the IEEE, the American Statistical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2021, the University of Lausanne conferred upon her an honorary doctorate, and in 2023, she received the COPSS Distinguished Achievement Award and Lectureship.
