The Andrásfai graph remains a significant contribution to the field of graph theory, bearing the name of the mathematician who first described and investigated these extreme structures. Spanning a career that crossed several decades of research and pedagogical commitment in Hungary, his work focused on the intricate properties of mathematical networks and discrete structures.
Academic Foundation
Béla Andrásfai began his formal schooling in 1942 at the Verbőczy High School in Budapest, later moving to Szombathely High School in 1946 before graduating in 1951. He pursued higher education at the Budapest College of Pedagogy, where he qualified as a teacher of mathematics and physics in 1954. He earned further credentials from Eötvös Loránd University in 1957. Early professional experience included a tenure as a teaching assistant at the College of Pedagogy between 1953 and 1955.

His institutional career transitioned to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Budapest Technical University. He served as an assistant professor starting in 1963, the same year he was awarded the title of Candidate of Mathematical Sciences. By 1965, he achieved the rank of associate professor, a role he maintained until his retirement in 1996. During this period, he acted as both a designer and lecturer for discrete mathematics courses. His scientific focus remained largely on graph theory, leading to numerous publications including papers on cellular automata in trees and studies on the connection between chromatic numbers and maximal cliques.
Professional Engagement and Publications
Beyond university instruction, Andrásfai held active roles within the János Bolyai Mathematical Society, where he organized conferences and delivered technical lectures for educators. His influence extended to textbook literature, with notable English-language titles including 'Introductory graph theory' (1977) and 'Graph theory. Flows, matrices' (1991). His research was also published in German, such as his 1977 book 'Mathematisches Mosaik'. In 2011, he returned to the Eötvös Loránd University to teach an optional course titled Mathematics on the Dock.
