In 2003, Farhadi released his first feature film, Dancing in the Dust, which centered on the financial hardships surrounding a marriage dowry. He followed this with The Beautiful City, a narrative set within the confines of a detention center. His third directorial feature, Fireworks Wednesday, explored domestic disputes set against the backdrop of the Persian New Year. By 2009, he achieved a significant critical breakthrough with About Elly, a film detailing a tragic group trip to the Caspian Sea. This project secured him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival.

Farhadi achieved global prominence with the 2011 release of A Separation. The film received widespread acclaim for its depiction of Iranian culture and moral complexities, becoming the first Iranian production to win the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Throughout his career, he has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including a César Award for Best Foreign Film for The Past, and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay for The Salesman. His later work includes the film A Hero, which earned the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2021.
