Asamoah Gyan retired from professional football on 20 June 2023, concluding a career that saw him become the all-time leading goalscorer for the Ghana national team. Born in Accra on 22 November 1985, he developed his skills at Accra Academy before beginning his domestic career in 2003 with the Ghana Premier League club Liberty Professionals.
European Club Tenure
Gyan’s transition to European football began with Udinese in 2003, where he spent his initial seasons on loan at Modena to gain competitive experience. Following a return to Udinese, he scored eight goals during the 2006–07 season. In 2008, he moved to France to join Stade Rennais for a transfer fee of €8 million, playing 48 matches and scoring 14 goals. By August 2010, he signed with Sunderland for a club-record £13 million. During his time in the English Premier League, he recorded ten goals in 34 appearances before eventually moving to the UAE Pro League.

Upon joining Al Ain in 2011, Gyan established himself as a prolific striker in the UAE Pro League. In his first loan season, he scored 22 goals in 18 matches to become the league's top scorer. After moving to the club permanently, he helped the team retain the league title, finishing as top scorer with 31 goals in 22 matches during the 2012–13 season. He repeated this feat in the 2013–14 campaign, securing the top scorer title for a third consecutive time with 29 goals in 26 matches.
International Career
He participated in seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments between 2008 and 2019, securing third place in 2008 and finishing as a runner-up in 2010 and 2015. On the global stage, he played in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 FIFA World Cups. He holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player in World Cup history with six total goals.
