Arshad Nadeem

A throw of 92.97 metres at the 2024 Paris Olympics established a new Asian and Olympic record for Arshad Nadeem, securing his position as the first individual gold medalist from Pakistan in any Olympic sport. This historic performance marked a milestone for South Asian athletics, positioning the javelin thrower among the premier athletes in the event's global history.

Early Development and Transition

Born in 1997 in Khanewal, Nadeem grew up in a Punjabi Muslim Jat family in Mian Channu. Although he initially focused on cricket and participated in local tape-ball tournaments, his transition to athletics began in school after he caught the attention of coach Rasheed Ahmad Saqi. While he experimented with shot put and discus, he eventually committed to the javelin in 2015 at the suggestion of his father, Muhammad Ashraf.

Professional Emergence

Nadeem began competitive javelin throwing in 2015. His international debut included a bronze at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati and a podium finish at the Asian Junior Athletics Championship. By 2018, he had secured a bronze at the Asian Games in Jakarta and competed in the Commonwealth Games in Australia. He represents the Water and Power Development Authority, or WAPDA, in domestic competitions.

Global Competition and Breakthroughs

Nadeem became the first Pakistani track and field athlete to earn direct qualification under modern entry standards for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he finished fifth. In 2022, he achieved a significant breakthrough at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, surpassing the 90-metre mark with a 90.18 m throw. The following year, he earned a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships, becoming the first Pakistani to reach a world championship podium.
