Ariel Henry

Ariel Henry began his career in Port-au-Prince before establishing a specialized medical practice as a neurosurgeon in France and Haiti. His path eventually moved into national government, where he held several ministerial portfolios before assuming the role of Prime Minister in 2021. He navigated significant political instability and public health crises throughout his professional life, maintaining a career that spanned both medical and political institutions.

Medical and Academic Background

Born in 1949, Henry pursued extensive medical training internationally. After his studies in Port-au-Prince, he completed a neurosurgery residency in Montpellier, France, with Professor Claude Gros, receiving his doctoral thesis in 1982. He also obtained a Master of Public Health from Loma Linda University in 1989. His medical career included faculty positions at the University of Montpellier and the State University of Haiti, as well as a tenure as an administrator at the Adventist Hospital of Haiti. He served as a consultant for the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization during the 1990s.

Early Political Involvement

Henry entered the political sphere as a leader of the Democratic Convergence movement, which opposed the administration of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Following the 2004 coup d'état, he served on a seven-member council of sages supported by the United States. He subsequently joined the Ministry of Health under President René Préval, serving as director general and chief of staff between 2006 and 2011. During this time, he managed health responses to the 2010 earthquake and negotiated funding structures with American authorities.

Ministerial Roles and Party Affiliation

Throughout his career, Henry was associated with multiple political parties, including the Social Democratic Party, the Haitian Revolutionary Progressive Nationalist Party, Fusion of Haitian Social Democrats, and Inite. In 2015, President Michel Martelly appointed him Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities. Later that year, he transitioned to the position of Minister of Social Affairs and Labor under Prime Minister Evans Paul, serving until 2016.

Prime Ministry and Transition

In July 2021, Jovenel Moïse designated Henry as the next Prime Minister of Haiti. Following the assassination of Moïse days later, a political power struggle ensued. Henry eventually assumed the role of acting Prime Minister, presiding over the Council of Ministers while holding multiple ministerial titles, including Interior and Territorial Communities and Culture and Communication. His term was marked by controversy regarding the investigation into Moïse's death, specifically his alleged connections to suspect Joseph-Félix Badio. On 11 March 2024, following the formation of a Transitional Presidential Council, Henry announced his resignation.
