Early Life and Migration
Born to a Filipino mother and an American airman, Pineda grew up in Angeles City. He assisted his family in farming activities until he was identified by the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which connected him with a sponsor. At age 11, he traveled to the United States to seek treatment for nystagmus, a condition causing involuntary eye movement. He was later adopted by his sponsor and settled in California at age 14, where he enrolled at John Marshall High School.

In 1988, while attending school in Los Angeles, Pineda met William Adams, later known as will.i.am. The two formed a musical partnership, eventually establishing the group Atban Klann with other associates. Despite signing with Ruthless Records, their debut project, Grass Roots, remained unreleased following the death of label founder Eazy-E. In 1995, the group reformed as the Black Eyed Peas, distinguishing themselves from the prevailing gangsta rap aesthetic by incorporating a live band and diverse musical influences.
Commercial Breakthrough
The group saw a major shift in 2003 with the release of their third album, Elephunk. Fergie joined as a permanent member during its production, contributing to massive commercial success. The album achieved top 15 status in the United States and reached number three on the UK Albums Chart, selling millions of copies globally. Subsequent releases like Monkey Business further solidified their reach, earning the group multiple Grammy nominations and a win for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group in 2006.
