Richard David James, known professionally as Aphex Twin, launched his career in electronic music in 1988, emerging from the Cornish free party scene. Since his early releases in the 1990s, he has built an extensive catalog of recordings as a composer and DJ, spanning styles from techno and ambient to acid and jungle.
Early Development and Technical Foundation
Born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1971, James spent his formative years in Cornwall, England. He attended Redruth School and later Cornwall College, graduating with a National Diploma in engineering. His early experimentation involved modifying electronic equipment and manipulating tape recorders. By age 12, he had acquired his first synthesizer and was composing music by age 14. He later briefly attended Kingston University to study electronics.

In the late 1980s, James participated in raves across the South West of England, notably at Gwennap Pit and various coastal locations. His debut EP, Analogue Bubblebath, was released in 1991 on Mighty Force Records. That same year, he co-founded the independent label Rephlex Records with Grant Wilson-Claridge. His debut album, Selected Ambient Works 85–92, followed in 1992 via the Belgian label Apollo, establishing his reputation within the international dance music community.
Professional Evolution and Awards
Throughout the 1990s, James released several charting albums and singles, including I Care Because You Do, Richard D. James Album, and the notable tracks Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. Following his 2001 album Drukqs and the conclusion of his contract with Warp Records, he released various works under aliases such as AFX and the Tuss. In 2014, he returned to Warp with the album Syro, which earned him the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2015. He continues to release material through his SoundCloud account.
