Early Career and Roman Training
Born in 1723, González Velázquez originated from a family of artists in Madrid, including his father Pablo and his brothers Alejandro and Luis. Upon his return to Spain in 1752, the painter undertook multiple religious projects. He contributed to the interior wall decorations at the Monastery of the Incarnation located in Madrid. Furthermore, he executed work for the cupola of the chapel situated within the Basilica del Pilar de Zaragoza. These projects established his technical proficiency in fresco and mural work.
Court Appointments and Administrative Roles
The year 1757 brought an appointment as a court painter. In this official capacity, he performed allegorical painting on the ceiling of the Queen's antechamber within the Royal Palace of Madrid. Later, in 1765, he accepted a promotion to serve as the director of the Academy of San Fernando in Mexico City. His administrative and artistic contributions continued through his collaboration with Francisco Bayeu y Subías and Anton Raphael Mengs, specifically in the creation of designs for the Royal Tapestry Factory.
