The Galves–Löcherbach model, introduced in 2013, established a framework for analyzing biological neural networks through systems of interacting stochastic chains with memory of variable length. Jefferson Antonio Galves developed this mathematical approach to represent the intrinsic stochasticity of neurons, where the probability of a firing event depends entirely on the history of the system since the previous spike.
Academic Foundations and Training
Born in São Paulo on 18 June 1947, Antonio Galves completed his foundational education at the University of São Paulo. He earned a Bachelor of Mathematics between 1964 and 1968, followed by a Master of Statistics from 1969 to 1972 under the guidance of advisor Carlos Alberto Barbosa Dantas. He furthered his international research experience by studying at Pierre and Marie Curie University from 1973 to 1974. In 1978, he completed his doctorate at the University of São Paulo with a thesis titled Construção de um processo forte de Markov, and he officially received his habilitation from the same institution in 1988.

Take the IQ test →Career at the University of São Paulo
Galves maintained a career-long affiliation with the University of São Paulo, beginning as a government employee in 1969. He transitioned into a permanent public servant role in 1970 and became a professor within the Department of Statistics at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics in 1990. Throughout his tenure, which lasted until 2023, he focused on probability theory and statistics, specializing in Markov particle systems. Following his passing, the university designated him as professor emeritus in 2024.
Leadership in Neuromathematics
In 2013, Galves founded NeuroMat, a research center at the University of São Paulo designed to integrate theoretical neuroscience with advanced mathematical modeling. As the chief executive officer from 2013 to 2023, he managed the center's efforts to study stochastic systems and bioinformatics. He also coordinated the Support Center for Research in Mathematics, Computing, Language and Brain, known as MaCLinC.
Professional Recognition and Legacy
Galves was elected as a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences on 5 March 1997. In 2007, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit. His influence on the field was marked by the 26th Brazilian School of Probability, which was held in his honour in 2023. On 26 June 2024, the building housing the Núcleo de Apoio à Pesquisa em Modelagem Estocástica e Complexidade was renamed the Antonio Galves building.
