Antoine Frérot

French businessman

Antoine Frérot, born in Fontainebleau in 1958, navigated a professional trajectory that spanned engineering research and high-level corporate governance. Educated at the École Polytechnique and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, he transitioned from academic project management to directing complex international utility operations, ultimately overseeing the strategic evolution of Veolia across thirteen years as its chief executive.

Foundational Training and Early Work

Frérot completed his studies at the École Polytechnique in 1977 before earning a PhD in civil engineering from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées. During his university years, he co-founded a research laboratory focused on hydrology and environmental sciences. His professional career began in 1981 at the Central Research Office for French Overseas Departments and Territories. By 1984, he joined the think-tank CERGRENE as project manager, remaining there until 1988, when he moved to Crédit national to manage financial operations for transport and heavy industry.

Career at Veolia and Its Predecessors

In 1990, Frérot joined the Compagnie Générale des Eaux, serving as task-force director. By 1995, he took on roles as CEO of CGEA Transport and the Compagnie General of Automobile Enterprises. Following his appointment to the board of Vivendi Environnement in 2000, he directed the CONNEX transport division. By 2003, he assumed leadership roles within Veolia Water and Veolia Environnement, setting the stage for his appointment as CEO of the group in 2009.

Strategic Restructuring

Upon becoming Chairman and CEO of Veolia in 2010, Frérot initiated a shift toward a decentralized model focused on high-growth environmental markets, including pollution treatment and the circular economy. He reduced the company's transport footprint and constrained international expansion to roughly forty nations. This strategy generated significant revenue growth, moving the firm from a deficit in 2011 to a profit of 394 million euros by the end of his initial mandates. In 2019, he led the company in formally adopting a 'Purpose' aimed at contributing to human progress through UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Advocacy and Recognition

Beyond corporate management, Frérot served as President of ANVIE and participated in forums like the World Economic Summit in Davos. He advocated for a stable carbon price as a mechanism for climate policy and economic development. His contributions were recognized through several national honors, including the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2015 and the National Order of Merit in 2010 and 2011. He also maintains an interest in the arts, serving as honorary president for the Salon international des Arts Premiers.
