Anthony Joshua

Anthony Joshua emerged as a major force in professional heavyweight boxing following a gold-medal performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Born in Watford in 1989, he transitioned from a late start in the amateur ranks to hold multiple world titles simultaneously. His career trajectory tracks a rapid ascent through the sport, marked by both unified championship reigns and high-profile challenges.

Amateur Development and Olympic Success

Joshua began his boxing training at age 18 in 2007 at Finchley ABC. His amateur career progressed rapidly, winning the senior ABA Championships in 2010 and 2011. He earned a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships in Baku, which secured his entry into the 2012 Olympic Games. During the London tournament, he secured the super-heavyweight gold medal by defeating Roberto Cammarelle in the final via count-back.

Professional Rise

Turning professional in 2013 under the Matchroom Sport banner, Joshua debuted at the O2 Arena with a first-round technical knockout against Emanuele Leo. He quickly established a reputation for finishing bouts early, securing multiple knockout victories against opponents including Paul Butlin and Hrvoje Kišiček. By 2014, The Ring magazine named him Prospect of the Year.

Championship Reign

Joshua captured the IBF heavyweight title in 2016. In 2017, he added the WBA and IBO titles, followed by the WBO title in 2018. His unified reign spanned until 2021, featuring a series of title defenses and a notable 2019 rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr. to reclaim his belts. Later professional contests included bouts against Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022, as well as a 2024 challenge for the IBF title against Daniel Dubois.

Recognition and Honors

His contributions to the sport have been acknowledged through various distinctions. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013. He received the Ali–Frazier Award in 2017. His 2017 bout against Wladimir Klitschko was recognized as Fight of the Year by both The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.
