Born on 3 May 1962 in Bonn, Anselm Jappe spent his early childhood years in Cologne and the Périgord. He pursued his higher education in Paris and Rome, eventually completing his studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences. Under the guidance of his advisor, Mario Perniola, Jappe earned his doctorate in philosophy. Much of his output centers on the critique of value school of Marxism. His written works focus on human emancipation and the structural decomposition of capitalism, often exploring how constant cycles of economic crisis drive the system toward its own eventual dissolution.
Recent Publications and Teaching
His 2023 publication, The Self-Devouring Society, argues that modern capitalism fosters widespread narcissism among individuals. This theme of capitalist breakdown continues his earlier inquiries, such as those found in the 2017 collection, The Writing on the Wall, and his 2020 examination of the construction industry, Béton – Arme de construction massive du capitalisme. Currently residing in Italy, Jappe teaches aesthetics at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, having previously taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Frosinone during the 2002-2003 academic year.
