Research on Female Psychology

Reich authored a 1940 study concerning female sexual submission, identifying it as a byproduct of childhood narcissistic injury. She proposed that women lacking self-esteem often identified with grandiose male partners to compensate. Additionally, her research into grotesque humor explored how individuals caricatured their own physical flaws to mitigate the pressure of a strict superego, a mechanism that sometimes resulted in depression when it failed.

Clinical Methodology and Countertransference

In her technical contributions to psychoanalysis, Reich defended the classical definition of countertransference, viewing it as the analyst's projection of their own past feelings onto the patient. She highlighted the persistent challenge for practitioners to distinguish between their own projections and the patient's reality. She further noted that analysts often retain a perceived aura of omnipotence, an illusion that only dissipates after significant time has passed following the termination of therapy.
