Professional Foundations and Operatic Ascent
Born in Stockholm in 1955, von Otter pursued her formal musical education at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, studying under Vera Rózsa. Her professional operatic trajectory began as an ensemble member of the Basel Opera between 1983 and 1985, where she debuted as Alcina in Haydn's Orlando paladino. By December 1988, she achieved a significant milestone with her Metropolitan Opera debut in the role of Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro.

A consistent feature of her career is her ongoing partnership with Swedish pianist Bengt Forsberg, with whom she has performed numerous recitals and recorded extensive repertoire. Her artistic output is notable for its genre diversity, including the 2001 collaborative album For the Stars with Elvis Costello. She has also engaged deeply with contemporary works, including singing the Evangelist in the 2006 premiere of Sven-David Sandström's Ordet – en passion and portraying the principal role of Charlotte in Sebastian Fagerlund's 2017 opera Autumn Sonata.
Legacy and Personal Projects
In 2007, von Otter released an album featuring music composed by individuals held within the Theresienstadt ghetto. This project held personal significance, as her father, Göran von Otter, had attempted to disseminate information regarding death camps during his time as a diplomat. Her contributions to the vocal arts have been recognized through numerous honors, including the 2003 Rolf Schock Prize in Musical Arts and multiple Echo Klassik awards. In 2016, she performed as Leonora in the premiere of Thomas Adès' The Exterminating Angel.
