Anne Lauvergeon served as the chief executive officer of Areva from 2001 to 2011, establishing herself as an international proponent of nuclear energy. Her tenure involved the consolidation of Cogema and Framatome into a integrated nuclear conglomerate, positioning the firm as one of the world's leading uranium producers through an expansive industrial business model.
Early Career and Public Service
Educated at the École Normale Supérieure and Mines ParisTech, Lauvergeon trained as a physicist and engineer. She began her professional life with the Inspection Générale des Carrières between 1985 and 1988. In 1990, she transitioned into government service, acting as the personal representative, or sherpa, for President François Mitterrand. In this capacity, she managed international trade missions and coordinated preparations for G7 summits until 1995.

After leaving the Elysée, Lauvergeon joined the investment bank Lazard as a managing partner before moving to Alcatel in 1997 as general director. By 1999, she assumed the leadership of Cogema. Under her guidance, the organization was restructured into Areva, an entity focused on providing comprehensive nuclear services, mirroring a Nespresso-style model that paired nuclear reactor sales with the long-term supply of profitable uranium fuel.
Strategic Challenges and Departure
Lauvergeon faced significant operational hurdles, including substantial cost overruns at the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant in Finland and the loss of a significant contract in Abu Dhabi. Despite her efforts to modernize the company, her tenure concluded in June 2011 when Prime Minister François Fillon announced her mandate would not be renewed. Following her exit, she engaged in legal disputes regarding severance pay and investigations into the 2007 acquisition of the Canadian mining firm UraMin.
