Academic Background
Before achieving international sports recognition, Kiesenhofer pursued an extensive academic career in mathematics. Between 2008 and 2011, she studied at the Vienna University of Technology, followed by studies at the University of Cambridge. In 2016, she completed her PhD at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, focusing on integrable systems on b-symplectic manifolds. From 2017 until 2021, she held a postdoctoral position at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where she contributed to research on nonlinear partial differential equations within mathematical physics.

Kiesenhofer transitioned to competitive cycling after an injury hindered her participation in triathlon and duathlon events between 2011 and 2013. Her early professional cycling career included joining the Catalan team Frigoríficos Costa Brava – Naturalium. A breakthrough occurred in 2016 when she won the Coupe d'Espagne and secured a stage victory and second place overall in the Tour de l'Ardèche. Throughout her career, she has raced for various teams, including Roland Le Dévoluy, and served as a trainer for Team Picnic PostNL starting in 2025.
The Tokyo Olympic Performance
In the 2020 Olympic road race, Kiesenhofer entered as the sole representative for Austria without the backing of a professional team or coach. She joined an early breakaway group that established a significant lead over the chasing pack. With 41 kilometres remaining, she separated from the group and maintained her advantage to win gold. The peloton, including silver medalist Annemiek van Vleuten, finished 75 seconds later, largely unaware that Kiesenhofer remained ahead of them.
