Cloud Gate, the stainless steel structure colloquially known as The Bean, remains a definitive example of Anish Kapoor’s ability to manipulate public space through industrial materials. Since his emergence in the 1970s, the Mumbai-born creator has maintained a multi-disciplinary practice spanning sculpture, painting, and scenography, consistently blurring the boundaries between physical art objects and large-scale architectural interventions.
Formative Years and Education
Born in 1954 in Mumbai, India, Kapoor attended The Doon School before moving to the United Kingdom in the 1970s. His formal artistic training took place at Hornsey College of Art and Chelsea College of Art and Design. He also studied at Middlesex University and the European Ceramics Work Center in 1994. Early in his professional career, he taught at the University of Wolverhampton.

Take the IQ test →Early Sculptural Practice
During the 1980s, Kapoor gained attention for geometric and biomorphic sculptures characterized by the application of vibrant powder pigments. These monochromatic works often relied on simple materials like granite, limestone, marble, and plaster. By defining the floor or wall with these pigments, his early installations suggested forms partially submerged in space, reflecting an interest in infinity and the void.
Reflective Surfaces and Large Installations
By 1995, Kapoor transitioned toward using polished stainless steel to create mirror-like surfaces that distort their surroundings. This shift enabled the production of ambitious projects such as Cloud Gate in Chicago and the public installation Eye in Stone. His work has since expanded into diverse materials, including wax and Cor-Ten steel, often challenging viewers to engage with perceptually complex, site-specific interiors.
Awards and Professional Standing
Kapoor’s career is marked by extensive institutional recognition, including the 1991 Turner Prize and the 2011 Praemium Imperiale. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 and received the Padma Bhushan in 2012. In 2011, he was named Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and an honorary doctor of the University of Oxford.
