Joining the Social Democratic Party in 1974, he served as Minister for Finance from 1980 to 1981. In 1985, he ascended to the role of Prime Minister, leading a minority government. By 1987, his party secured an absolute majority in the Assembly of the Republic, a feat he repeated in 1991. His policies, characterized by systemic economic changes, became known as Cavacoism and focused on infrastructure development and trade.
Presidency and Public Service
Following a period as an advisor to the Bank of Portugal and a return to academia, he successfully contested the 2006 presidential election, becoming the first center-right President of Portugal since 1974. He served two terms as Head of State, concluding his mandate in 2016.
