Basinas debuted for Greece on 18 August 1999 during a 3-1 victory against El Salvador, netting his first goal two days later. Under manager Otto Rehhagel, he became a regular fixture. His contribution to the 2004 tournament included a penalty kick in the opening win against Portugal. Following the retirement of Theodoros Zagorakis, Basinas assumed the team captaincy. By 1 April 2009, he achieved his 100th international cap during a match against Israel.
European Club Tenure
In 2006, Basinas joined the Spanish side Mallorca, where he assisted in preventing relegation and later helped the team secure a seventh-place finish. He departed in 2008 and briefly joined AEK Athens on a three-year contract. In February 2009, he moved to the Premier League with Portsmouth, making three appearances. Although he remained with the club during their run to the 2010 FA Cup final, he was not included in the matchday squad against Chelsea. His final professional stints included a brief period at Arles-Avignon in 2010. He currently serves as the sporting director for Iraklis.
