Born in Moscow in 1953, Makarevich grew up listening to the English rock band The Beatles, which profoundly shaped his musical trajectory. While completing his formal education at the Moscow Architectural Institute, he founded Mashina Vremeni. The band served as a pioneer for rock music within the Soviet Union, blending Western rock and blues elements. Throughout his tenure with the band, he remained the primary songwriter.

Makarevich transitioned his creative focus into multiple media beyond his primary musical career. He authored several volumes of memoirs and poetry collections, and his interest in visual arts led to numerous solo and joint exhibitions throughout the 1990s and early 2000s in cities including Moscow and Riga. He also ventured into television, hosting programs such as the cookery and chat show Smak, and later, the series Three Windows and a documentary program focused on scuba diving.
Public Standing and Political Transitions
Initially a supporter of Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev, Makarevich withdrew his endorsement in 2011, citing the lack of genuine elections. His public dissent deepened after he performed for displaced people in Sviatohirsk, Ukraine, in 2014. Following his vocal criticism of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the Russian government designated him a foreign agent. He subsequently immigrated to Israel, where he currently resides with his wife and son.
