Early Career and Editing
Born in Harrogate on 7 March 1973, Haigh grew up in Croydon and attended Newcastle University to study history. His professional entry into the film industry occurred behind the scenes. Haigh initiated his directorial career with the short film Oil. His first feature-length production, Greek Pete, premiered at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2009. The narrative, centered on a rent-boy in London, earned the Artistic Achievement Award at Outfest. He followed this with the 2011 romantic drama Weekend, which earned an Audience Award for Emerging Visions at the SXSW Film Festival and established his reputation for subtle, observational realism.
International Recognition
The 2015 drama 45 Years, which debuted in competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, brought Haigh global recognition. The film secured top acting honors for Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, with Rampling receiving an Academy Award nomination. He subsequently directed Lean on Pete, a 2017 adaptation of a Willy Vlautin novel, and the 2021 BBC Two limited series The North Water.
Recent Projects
In 2023, Haigh directed All of Us Strangers, an adaptation of the Taichi Yamada novel. Starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, the film premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival and received positive critical reception for its exploration of vulnerability. Beyond feature filmmaking, his 2024 work includes directing a music video for the Pet Shop Boys track A New Bohemia, filmed in Margate with Tracey Emin and Russell Tovey.
