The acquisition of Allied Mining and Processing in April 2003 provided the foundation for Fortescue Metals Group, a venture that established Andrew Forrest as a dominant figure in the Australian iron ore industry. Born in 1961 in Perth, he leveraged his early professional experience in finance to navigate the complex landscape of industrial commodities and large-scale pastoral management.
Early Background and Education
Forrest spent his childhood in the Pilbara region at Minderoo Station, a property initially established by his ancestors in 1878. He received his early education through the School of the Air and at Onslow Primary School. After relocating to Perth, he attended Christ Church Grammar School and Hale School. He subsequently graduated from the University of Western Australia, where he focused his studies on economics and politics. Later in his academic pursuits, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Ecology.

Before leading Fortescue, Forrest served as the founding CEO of Anaconda Nickel in 1993. His tenure there concluded in 2001 amid significant financial distress for the company. Following this, he pivoted to iron ore in the Pilbara. Under his leadership, Fortescue achieved its inaugural shipment to China in May 2008. By 2014, the company completed a 9.2 billion dollar expansion, significantly increasing its annual production capacity to 155 million tonnes. His mining operations hold extensive tenements, including sites at Cloudbreak, Christmas Creek, Mount Nicholas, and Tongolo.
Diversification and Pastoral Holdings
Through his holding company, Tattarang, Forrest manages a portfolio spanning energy, property, and agri-food. This group includes divisions such as Squadron Energy, Harvest Road, and Wyloo Metals. His agricultural interests are anchored by the repurchase of Minderoo Station in 2009. He expanded his pastoral footprint significantly by acquiring Nanutarra and Uaroo Stations in 2014, followed by Brick House and Minilya Stations in 2015. Further expansion occurred in 2020 with the purchase of Jubilee Downs and Quanbun in the Kimberley region.
Public Policy and Sport
Forrest has frequently engaged in public discourse regarding taxation, notably opposing the Minerals Resource Rent Tax proposed by the Gillard government. Beyond his industrial activities, he established the sporting initiative Global Rapid Rugby following the exclusion of the Western Force from the Super Rugby competition in 2017. Initially launched as a series of exhibition matches, the tournament underwent various structural changes and rebranding efforts before its 2020 season was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
