Andrés Manuel López Obrador served as the 65th President of Mexico between 2018 and 2024, concluding a political career spanning more than three decades. Early Development and Education

Born on 13 November 1953 in Tepetitán, Tabasco, he was the firstborn son of merchants Andrés López Ramón and Manuela Obrador González. After completing his early education in his home state, he relocated to Mexico City in the 1970s. He enrolled at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1973, where he pursued studies in political science and public administration. He officially earned his degree in 1987 following the submission of his thesis regarding the formation of the Mexican national state.

Career in Regional and Local Politics

His political trajectory commenced in 1976 with the Institutional Revolutionary Party. He gained initial public experience as the director of the Indigenous Institute of Tabasco. By 1989, he shifted his affiliation to the Party of the Democratic Revolution. His administrative profile rose significantly when he served as Head of Government of Mexico City from 2000 to 2005, a period noted for his focus on infrastructure development and social welfare programs.

Ascent to the Presidency

Following unsuccessful presidential campaigns in 2006 and 2012, he founded the National Regeneration Movement as a civil association in 2011, later transitioning it into a registered political party. In the 2018 general election, he secured a victory under the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition. His administration, which lasted until September 2024, emphasized investment in sectors previously liberalized and the implementation of social reforms intended to assist the working class.
