The icon of the Trinity, painted around 1410, remains the only work definitively authenticated as entirely the creation of Andrei Rublev. By removing the traditional figures of Abraham and Sarah to emphasize the mystery of the divine, he redefined the possibilities of Eastern Orthodox iconography through a synthesis of asceticism and Byzantine harmony.
Early Career and Training
Historical records first mention Rublev in 1405, when he collaborated with Theophanes the Greek and Prokhor of Gorodets to decorate the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the Moscow Kremlin. During this period, he was considered a junior master, likely having received training from Theophanes, a prominent Byzantine artist. He is thought to have resided at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius during the tenure of Nikon of Radonezh.

Much of Rublev's output involved large-scale ecclesiastical commissions alongside his contemporary, Daniel Chorny. In 1408, the two painters executed frescoes and icons for the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. They later collaborated on the Trinity Cathedral at the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius between 1425 and 1427. Additionally, historical scholarship attributes at least one miniature in the Khitrovo Gospels to his hand.
Final Years and Legacy
Following the death of Daniel Chorny, Rublev moved to the Andronikov Monastery in the Grand Principality of Moscow. There, he completed his final project: the frescoes for the Saviour Cathedral. He died at this location between 1427 and 1430. His aesthetic, characterized by serene figures and balanced color, was formalized as a standard for church painting by the Stoglavi Sobor in 1551.
