Born in Beijing in 1951, he established a career centered on applied mathematics and mathematical physics, eventually securing a position as a professor at the Institute for Problems in Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences starting in 1991.
Academic Foundation and Training
Polyanin completed his undergraduate studies at the Lomonosov Moscow State University Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, graduating with honors in 1974. He subsequently pursued advanced research at the Institute for Problems in Mechanics, earning a Ph.D. in 1981 followed by a Doctor of Sciences degree in 1986. His career at the Institute began in 1975, and in 2004, he expanded his academic responsibilities by accepting a professorship at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
Mathematical Contributions and Methodology
His research focuses on the theory of differential and integral equations, fluid mechanics, and heat and mass transfer. Within these domains, he has introduced analytical techniques including the functional constraints method, the asymptotic analogies method, and the discrete group approach. These frameworks have enabled him to derive exact solutions for several thousand ordinary, partial, and delay partial differential equations, as well as various integral and functional equations.

As an author, Polyanin has produced more than 30 books published in English, Russian, German, and Bulgarian, alongside over 160 research papers and three patents. His bibliography includes a series of technical handbooks published by CRC Press, such as the Handbook of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and the Handbook of Integral Equations. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of EqWorld and sits on the editorial board of the journal Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Engineering.
Institutional Recognition
Polyanin maintains active roles within the scientific community as a member of the Russian National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the Mathematics and Mechanics Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission. His contributions to mechanics and education were recognized with the Chaplygin Prize in 1991, an award from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation in 2001, and the Medal In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow.
