Early Formation and Training
Born in 1967 in Eltville am Rhein, Scholl began his musical life at age seven within the Kiedricher Chorbuben. In 1987, he secured a position at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis despite the institution primarily accepting post-graduate candidates. Under the mentorship of Richard Levitt and René Jacobs, he developed the alto range that characterized his later work. His time in Switzerland established his specialization in Baroque music and launched his professional trajectory.

Scholl gained prominence performing roles written for the 18th-century alto castrato Senesino. His 1998 Glyndebourne debut as Bertarido in Handel's Rodelinda brought critical attention, a role he reprised at the Metropolitan Opera in 2006. He also performed the title role in Handel's Giulio Cesare across productions in Denmark, Paris, and Lausanne between 2002 and 2010. His work in these productions often utilized collaborations with conductors such as William Christie.
Discography and Academic Recognition
The majority of his recorded career has been managed through labels Harmonia Mundi and Decca. Beyond performance, Scholl engages in academic and teaching roles, serving as an instructor at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and becoming a professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg in 2019.
