Academic and Engineering Foundation
Born in 1976 in Copenhagen, Mogensen pursued a rigorous international education. He graduated from Rygaards International School in 1992 and earned an International Baccalaureate at Copenhagen International School in 1995. His technical expertise was forged at Imperial College London, where he completed a Master of Science in Engineering in 1999. He later secured a Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. His early professional career included roles at Vestas Wind Systems and various contract positions in Germany and Portugal involving orbit control systems and guidance navigation.

The European Space Agency selected Mogensen as its first Danish astronaut in May 2009. By November 2010, he had joined the European Astronaut Corps. His preparation for spaceflight involved extreme environments, such as the 2012 ESA CAVES training in Sardinia, where he contributed to the discovery of a new crustacean species. He also served as an aquanaut during the NEEMO 19 mission in 2014 and participated in the PANGAEA program, which trains crews to identify planetary geological features in locations like the Italian Dolomites and the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote.
Spaceflight Missions: Iriss and Huginn
Mogensen launched to the International Space Station on 2 September 2015 for the Iriss mission, traveling via Soyuz TMA-18M. During this short-duration flight, he performed tasks such as remote robotic control and photographing atmospheric light phenomena known as Red Sprites and Blue Jets. He returned to the station in August 2023 for the Huginn mission aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon. As the commander of Expedition 70, he performed critical maintenance and research before returning to Earth on 12 March 2024.
Leadership and Recognition
Following his contributions to European space exploration, Mogensen was appointed to lead the European Astronaut Corps in 2025, succeeding Frank De Winne. His professional achievements have been formally acknowledged by the Kingdom of Denmark, which awarded him the Royal Medal of Recompense in gold with crown in 2015. In 2024, he received the H.C. Ørsted silver medal for his work in science and technology.
