Andreas Deja, born in Gdańsk in 1957, followed specific instructions to study animal anatomy and observe the world, eventually joining The Walt Disney Company in 1980 to become a central figure in the studio's output.
Early Development and Training
Moving to Dinslaken near Duisburg in 1958, Deja developed an early interest in animation after viewing The Jungle Book at age eleven. He maintained contact with Disney Productions throughout his youth, receiving advice to focus on life drawing and animal studies, which led him to spend significant time at the Duisburg Zoo. His formal education included study at the Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium under Alfred Grimm, followed by graphic design training at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.

Hired by the studio in August 1980, Deja began his career working on The Black Cauldron while sharing workspace with Tim Burton. He sought technical guidance from the retired Nine Old Men, focusing on character development and movement. His portfolio of supervising animation credits includes King Triton and Vanessa in The Little Mermaid, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Jafar in Aladdin, and Scar in The Lion King. His character work extended to Hercules, Lilo Pelekai in Lilo & Stitch, Mama Odie and Juju in The Princess and the Frog, and Tigger in Winnie the Pooh.
Legacy and Historical Projects
Beyond his production work, Deja serves as a resident specialist for Mickey Mouse animation and maintains an extensive archive of early Disney materials. In 2011, he launched a blog to document this collection. He authored the 2015 book The Nine Old Men: Lessons, Techniques, and Inspiration from Disney's Great Animators. He also curated the 2022 exhibition Walt Disney's The Jungle Book: Making a Masterpiece at The Walt Disney Family Museum and authored its companion volume. As of June 2023, he worked on the short film Mushka.
