Andreas Achenbach

Born in 1815 in Kassel, he became a central figure in the Düsseldorf school of painting, contributing to German landscape and seascape traditions across a prolific career spanning nearly a century.

Formative Years and Education

Achenbach began his artistic training in 1827 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under instructors Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow and Heinrich Christoph Kolbe. By 1831, he successfully sold a painting at a local exhibition. His formal education continued with landscape studies under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. Early professional growth involved travel across the Netherlands, Bavaria, and Tyrolia, leading to a studio opening at the Städelsche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt with support from Alfred Rethel.

Professional Range and Geography

Beyond his status as a painter, Achenbach practiced as a watercolorist, etcher, printmaker, lithographer, and illustrator. His career necessitated frequent movement; he maintained a presence in Norway, Paris, Rome, Saint Petersburg, Munich, Copenhagen, and Frankfurt. His work was officially recognized through memberships in the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and the Künstlerhaus in Austria. He was also a foundational member of the Malkasten art association in Düsseldorf.

Awards and Legacy

Throughout his life, Achenbach received significant international honors. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1864 and received the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 1871. Additional decorations included the Order of Leopold and the Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts. Following his death in 1910 in Düsseldorf, he was interred in a tomb featuring sculpture by Karl Janssen, and the city later commemorated his influence by naming a street in his honor.
