Andrea Bargnani

Italian basketball player

The 2006 NBA draft saw Andrea Bargnani selected first overall, marking his arrival as the first European player and the second athlete without American high school or college experience to reach that top position. Standing seven feet tall, he brought a versatile skillset as a power forward-center from Italy to the professional stage.

Early Development in Italy

Bargnani began his basketball path with Stella Azzurra Roma during the 2002–03 season in the Serie B2 league. He soon transitioned to the Italian LBA side Benetton Treviso. Over three seasons, he refined his play, culminating in a 2005–06 campaign where he averaged 12 points and over five rebounds per game. He led the LBA in blocks that year and earned the EuroLeague Rising Star award.

Transition to the NBA

Selected by the Toronto Raptors, Bargnani made his professional debut in November 2006 against the New Jersey Nets. His initial months in the league earned him back-to-back Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month honors in January and March 2007. Despite an emergency appendectomy in March 2007, he helped his team reach the playoffs, eventually securing a place on the NBA All-Rookie team.

Career Progression and Adjustments

Following a challenging 2007–08 season that drew criticism for his rebounding and shooting consistency, Bargnani added 15 pounds of muscle during the summer. This physical preparation preceded a 2008–09 season where he recorded career-high scoring performances. He continued his career through stints with the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, followed by a final season in Spain during 2016–17.
