Administrative leadership in French mathematics occupied a significant portion of André Warusfel's career, most notably his tenure as Inspector General of Mathematics from 1994 to 2001. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure, he balanced institutional oversight with a dedicated focus on educational outreach and historical inquiry into the foundations of his discipline.
Academic and Institutional Career
Warusfel focused his teaching efforts on the rigorous preparatory classes within high schools, specifically at Henri IV and Louis-le-Grand. Following his departure from the role of Inspector General in 2001, he retained the title of Inspector General Emeritus. His editorial work was equally prominent, as he directed the Revue de mathématiques spéciales for over three decades, from 1974 until 2007.

Beyond pure mathematics, Warusfel contributed to the field of science communication. In 1964, he participated in the restructuring of the periodical Atomes, a publication that later transitioned into La Recherche. His bibliography spanned diverse topics, ranging from the technical to the popular, including a 1981 guide on solving the Rubik's Cube with a preface by Ernő Rubik. His earlier works, such as Les Nombres et leurs mystères in 1961 and the 1966 Dictionnaire raisonné de mathématiques, established his presence in French scientific literature.
Historical Research
In his later years, Warusfel redirected his focus toward the history of science, particularly the contributions of René Descartes. In 2009, he edited a new edition of La Géométrie for the Gallimard complete works collection. He subsequently defended a thesis at the University of Paris Sorbonne-Paris IV in June 2010 under the supervision of Jean-Luc Marion. His 2009 analysis of Leonhard Euler further integrated historical context with a survey of mathematical evolution.
