Early Development and Influences
Lee began studying piano at age six, influenced by her mother and the music of Mozart and Beethoven. Following her exposure to the film Amadeus at age eight, she spent nine years in formal classical piano training. Throughout her youth, her interests broadened to include film score composers like Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer, as well as electronic artists like Björk. After moving to Little Rock, Arkansas, Lee attended Pulaski Academy. She balanced her personal songwriting projects with participation in the school choir, eventually serving as its president. During this period, she composed 'Listen to the Rain' for a graduation performance. Her residence in Little Rock also facilitated her meeting with guitarist Ben Moody in 1994 at a Christian youth camp, an encounter that provided the impetus to formalize her vision for a band that would fuse contrasting musical styles.
The Evanescence Project
Evanescence emerged from the collaboration between Lee and Moody, centered on their mutual interest in combining cinematic, classical, and heavy metal elements. The pair initially performed acoustic sets in local bookstores and coffee houses. Lee provided the lead vocals, keyboards, and primary songwriting for the group, driving a sound defined by unconventional arrangements. Beyond her work with the band, she has engaged in solo projects, including film score contributions for War Story and Indigo Grey: The Passage, and the 2016 children's album Dream Too Much.
Advocacy and Recognition
Lee has received various industry honors, including the 2008 Songwriter Icon Award from the National Music Publishers Association and multiple awards for her film score work. In 2012, VH1 ranked her among the top 100 greatest women in music.
