Early Life and Education
Raised in the cosmopolitan Badaro neighborhood of Beirut, Maalouf was the second of four children. His educational foundation was established at the Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour, followed by studies in sociology and economics at the Saint Joseph University of Beirut. These formative years preceded his career in journalism, where he eventually directed the Beirut-based daily newspaper An-Nahar.

The onset of the Lebanese civil war in 1975 prompted his move to Paris in 1976. This shift reoriented his professional life toward French-language writing. His debut, The Crusades Through Arab Eyes (1983), utilized contemporary Arabic sources to provide a historical perspective on the conflict. His subsequent bibliography includes titles such as Leo Africanus, Samarkand, The First Century after Beatrice, Balthasar's Odyssey, and Ports of Call.
Awards and Academic Distinctions
Maalouf has received widespread recognition for his work, including the Prix Goncourt in 1993 for the novel The Rock of Tanios. He became a member of the Académie française in 2011, filling seat number 29. Further honors include the 2019 Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit, the 2019 “Today” Prize, the 2025 FIL Award, and the 2009 Livre et droits humains award.
Collaborative Musical Works
Beyond prose, Maalouf has contributed significantly to contemporary music as a librettist. He collaborated exclusively with Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho to create four major musical texts. These include the opera L'Amour de loin (2000), the opera Adriana Mater (2003), the oratorio La Passion de Simone (2006), and the monodrama Émilie (2010).
