Lilius developed the manuscript that proposed shifting the calendar system. Although he died in 1576 in Rome, his brother, Antonio, presented the work to Pope Gregory XIII. The proposal was reviewed by a reform commission, resulting in the 1577 printing of the Compendium novae rationis restituendi kalendarium.
