Born in Seville in 1505, Santa Cruz functioned as a critical technical expert for the Spanish Crown. He held significant positions as a cartographer for the Consejo de Indias and as a cosmographer at the Casa de Contratación. Beyond mapmaking, he provided instruction in astronomy and cosmography to the court of Charles V, acting as both an educator and a technical consultant on navigational methodology.

In 1530, he created the first map tracking magnetic variations from true north, a development intended to solve the persistent challenge of determining longitude at sea. His interest in nautical instrumentation led him to study and document the methods used by John Cabot, specifically focusing on how sun declination observed via a quadrant could aid in calculating accurate positions during transoceanic voyages.
Historical and Geographical Documentation
His output extended beyond technical mapping into historical record-keeping and geography. In 1542, he compiled the Islario general de todas las islas del mundo, a comprehensive document cataloging the world's islands commissioned by King Philip II. Additionally, he expanded his literary contributions by continuing the work of Hernando del Pulgar in the History of the Catholic Monarchs. He also authored a five-volume biography of Charles V, though the manuscript faced censorship under Philip II due to its inclusion of details regarding Spanish atrocities in the New World.
