Aron Baruch Dessauer, later known as Alois Dessauer, operated across the evolving financial and industrial landscape of early nineteenth-century Germany. Moving from his birthplace in Gochsheim through Königshofen ob der Tauber before settling in Aschaffenburg, he transitioned from traditional roles as a court banker and military supplier into the nascent sectors of paper production and manufacturing.
Financial and Military Foundations
Born in 1763 to community leader Baruch Dessauer and Mindel Seligmann, Dessauer began his professional path in the financial and logistics sectors. He served as an Electoral Mainz court banker and functioned as a military admodiator, or army supplier. By 1792, he had relocated to Königshofen ob der Tauber, where he married Behlasina David, the daughter of the local merchant Joseph David.

In 1798, Dessauer moved his family to Aschaffenburg. During this period, he maintained professional associations with Prince Primate Karl Theodor von Dalberg. A significant shift in his social and civic standing occurred in 1805 following his conversion to Catholicism. On August 23, 1805, he, his wife, and three of their children—Joseph, Georg, and Karl Friedrich—were baptized at the parish church of St. Agatha. Upon his baptism, Aron Baruch adopted the name Alois, while his wife took the name Anna Elisabeth. Shortly thereafter, on September 5, 1805, he paid a 15-guilder and 34-kreuzer fee to secure formal citizenship within Aschaffenburg.
Diversification into Manufacturing
Following his integration into Aschaffenburg society, Dessauer expanded his business interests significantly. He engaged in the trade of stone tablets and fine inks before establishing the Aschaffenburg colored paper factory in 1810. His status within the community continued to grow throughout his later years; he served as an honorary member of the local shooting society and, by 1826, held the position of councilor. He died in 1850 at the age of 87.
