Early Development and Education
Born in 1864 in the Karlshamn church parish, Alice Charlotta Sandström moved to Stockholm with her family in 1877. She pursued a formal education at Åhlinska skolan before enrolling at the Royal Seminary, the Högre lärarinneseminariet, between 1880 and 1883. Following her graduation, she worked as a governess, first in Finland and subsequently for the publisher Frans Beijer in Stockholm.

In 1885, she married the lawyer Jakob Tegnér. The couple relocated to the suburb of Djursholm in 1891, which became the hub of her professional and creative output. She contributed to the community by teaching at Djursholms samskola and serving as an organist and choir leader at the local chapel where Natanael Beskow preached. During this period, she became a member of the organization Tolfterna.
Musical Legacy and Composition
While recognized primarily for children's songs such as Sockerbagaren, Tre pepparkaksgubbar, and Bä, bä, vita lamm, Tegnér also composed within classical frameworks. Her catalog includes sacred music, cantatas, and a Violin Sonata in A Minor. Her final hymnbook, Nu ska vi sjunga, which featured illustrations by Elsa Beskow, reached the public in 1943, the year of her death in the Engelbrekt church parish.
Awards and Recognition
Her contributions to Swedish culture earned her several distinctions during her lifetime. She received the Litteris et Artibus medal in 1914. In 1926, she was inducted as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and she secured first prize in the Idun tonsättartävling competition in 1929. She was buried at Djursholms Begravningsplats.
