During these decades, he refined his political philosophy, shifting his focus toward protectionism while maintaining his professional activities as a journalist and barrister.

Following the federation of the Australian colonies, Deakin served as the inaugural Attorney-General for Australia starting in 1901. He transitioned to the office of Prime Minister in 1903, leading a government that frequently operated within shifting parliamentary alliances. Throughout his tenure, he sought to balance the interests of disparate political groups, eventually securing a functional legislative base to enact reforms.
The Fusion and Final Years
In 1909, Deakin orchestrated a political realignment known as the Fusion, uniting his supporters with free-trade factions to form a majority government. This final term, lasting until 1910, was marked by significant policy shifts. He retired from the Australian House of Representatives in 1913. Deakin died in Melbourne in 1919 and was interred at St Kilda Cemetery.
