A 16.32 percent stake in Alfa-Bank was sold by Alexei Kuzmichov in March 2023, marking his departure from the shareholders of the institution he helped build. Born in 1962 in Kirov, Russia, Kuzmichov evolved from a radio operator on the Soviet-Chinese border into a significant figure in international finance, trade, and the energy sector.
Early Ventures and Alfa Group
Kuzmichov enrolled in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1983, where he met Mikhail Fridman and German Khan. In 1988, these partners, along with Mikhail Alfimov, founded Alfa Photo to import photo chemicals. This venture eventually expanded into Alfa Eco in 1998, which served as the foundation for the Alfa Group Consortium. Kuzmichov oversees the group’s international trading operations and maintains a stake in various entities, including X5 Retail Group and the Rosvodokanal Group. The conglomerate’s reach grew to include VimpelCom, once the world's sixth-largest mobile network operator, and a significant role in the privatization of the TNK oil company.

Beyond his work with Alfa Group, Kuzmichov co-founded the Luxembourg-based investment firm LetterOne. This business manages assets across the energy, technology, and telecommunications sectors via units such as L1 Energy and L1 Technology. His involvement in the energy sector included the TNK-BP venture, half of which was sold to the state-run firm Rosneft for 2.5 billion dollars in March 2013. During his career, Forbes identified his net worth at 8.8 billion dollars in 2013 and 6.5 billion dollars in 2023.
Regulatory and Legal Challenges
Crown Resources, a trading arm of Alfa Group chaired by Kuzmichov, was the owner of oil cargo aboard the vessel The Prestige, which sank near Galicia, Spain, in 2002. Although the case involved significant environmental consequences, no financial claims or accusations were directed at Crown Resources. More recently, Kuzmichov has faced international scrutiny. In 2022, he was sanctioned by Canada, Australia, and the European Union. In 2023, the United States added him to the OFAC SDN List. French authorities detained him in October 2023, subsequently charging him with tax fraud and imposing travel restrictions.
