Alexandru Zaharescu

More than 350 publications mark the career of Alexandru Zaharescu, a mathematician whose research focus encompasses analytic number theory. His academic trajectory began in his native Romania, leading to advanced doctoral research and long-term faculty appointments. Throughout his career, he has bridged international mathematical institutions through extensive scholarly output and collaborative professional engagement.

Academic Foundations

Born on June 4, 1961, in Codlea, Romania, Zaharescu pursued his early education within his home country. He graduated from high school in 1980 and subsequently completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Bucharest in 1986. By 1989, he began his association with the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy. He earned his first PhD from the University of Bucharest in 1991 under the academic supervision of Nicolae Popescu.

Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Work

In 1995, Zaharescu completed a second PhD at Princeton University, where his research was directed by Peter Sarnak. Following this, he occupied several temporary positions to further his mathematical development, including tenures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, McGill University, and the Institute for Advanced Study.

Professional Tenure and Recognition

Zaharescu joined the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2000, where he maintains his role as a professor in the Department of Mathematics. His standing in the field was formally recognized in 2017 when he was elected a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society for his work in analytic number theory. In June 2021, the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy organized a conference to commemorate his 60th birthday. Most recently, in March 2024, he was appointed an Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy.
