A gold medal at the 1937 International Art Fair in Paris solidified Alexander Nikolayevich Samokhvalov’s status as a premier Soviet painter. Born in Bezhetsk in 1894, he emerged from the Imperial Academy of Arts to become a primary representative of the Leningrad school, blending technical discipline with the evolving aesthetic demands of the Soviet era.
Formative Training and Influences
Samokhvalov enrolled in the Higher Art School of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1914. His stylistic development was significantly shaped by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, whose theories on color and form introduced him to a system of dimensional painting. A 1921 expedition to Samarkand with his mentor proved transformative for his artistic outlook. By 1923, he graduated from Petrograd VKHUTEIN, now the Ilya Repin Institute, where his diploma work showcased a sophisticated, surrealist-adjacent approach to perspective.
