Alexander Lebedev transitioned from a career in Soviet state intelligence to a prominent role in the Russian financial sector. Born in Moscow in 1959, he leveraged his background as a former officer in the First Chief Directorate to build a diverse investment portfolio, later expanding his influence into international media ownership and the emerging field of decentralized finance.
Early Career and Intelligence Service
After graduating from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1982, Lebedev entered the intelligence community. He served in the First Chief Directorate of the KGB and later the Foreign Intelligence Service until 1992. Reports from the Italian External Intelligence and Security Agency have questioned the nature of his departure from state service, suggesting potential continuity between his intelligence work and subsequent business ventures.
Business Ventures and National Reserve Bank
Following his exit from the state apparatus, Lebedev established the Russian Investment-Finance Company. In 1995, he acquired the National Reserve Bank, which became the cornerstone of the National Reserve Corporation. His holdings expanded to include stakes in Aeroflot, Gazprom, and the Ilyushin Finance Co, alongside ventures in agriculture, housing, and telecommunications. By 2012, however, the National Reserve Bank faced liquidity challenges, leading Lebedev to restructure his Russian assets and close regional offices.
