Early Development and Training
Karelin began formal training in 1981 under the direction of Viktor Kuznetsov, who remained his coach throughout his entire tenure as a competitor. His upbringing involved physical tasks such as gathering firewood and caring for livestock, which he credited for building his foundational strength. By the age of 18, in 1985, he achieved the status of Master of Sport of the USSR, International Class, having already experimented with boxing, weightlifting, and several team sports.

Throughout his career, Karelin won nine World Championship gold medals and twelve European Championship gold medals. He secured Olympic gold in 1988, 1992, and 1996, and earned a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. His only two senior-level losses were controversial single-point defeats at the 1987 USSR Championships against Igor Rostorotsky and the 2000 Sydney Olympic finals against Rulon Gardner. For six years preceding that final match, no opponent had managed to score a single point against him in competition.
Political and Public Service
Following his transition from athletics, Karelin entered the political sphere. He served as a member of the State Duma from 1999 until 2021, participating in various convocations including the third through seventh. In 2020, he transitioned to the Federation Council of Russia. His work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Gold Olympic Order, the Silver Olympic Order, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, and the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
